In my works, there are several compositional elements that I consider very important. The craft of composition and attention to musical rhetoric and logic, as discussed in Schoenberg’s Fundamentals of Musical Composition, for example, is of vital importance to me. My compositions often exhibit contrasting aesthetics and styles which includes the exploration of neo-romanticism, texturalism, spectralism, experimentalism, developing variation, stratification, and thematicism, often also embracing a combination of these musical languages. Despite the seemingly divergent sonic identities in my music, all of them have a core that is based on form, logic, and rhetoric. Another element that is always present in my music is cultural and musical influences from my home country, South Africa. Recently I have also been enthusiastic about incorporating themes of social injustice and humanitarian issues into my music. These include racial, gender, and socio-economic inequalities. My composition, mabalêl, showcases themes of socio-economic injustices faced by communities in rural South Africa.
